DBT How Skills: Nonjudgmentally, One-Mindfully and Effectively

The DBT How skills describe the manner in which mindfulness is practised.

Nonjudgmentally

Notice judgments and return to facts, consequences, preferences and values. Nonjudgmental awareness does not mean approving harmful behaviour or abandoning moral judgment. It means reducing global labels such as “I am useless” and describing what actually happened.

One-mindfully

Give attention to one chosen activity at a time and return when attention wanders. This is a practice, not a rule that multitasking is always wrong. Adapt the exercise for attention differences, caregiving demands, disability and safety.

Effectively

Choose behaviour that is likely to work for the present goal, facts and context. Effectiveness does not mean manipulating others, ignoring values or accepting injustice. It asks what action is workable now.

Practice prompt

  • What judgment am I noticing?
  • What are the observable facts?
  • What single task or conversation needs my attention?
  • What response is most likely to support safety, values and the current goal?
