Bring emotional experience and reasoned information together before choosing what to do.
Wise Mind is a DBT mindfulness concept that balances Emotion Mind and Reasonable Mind. The goal is not to suppress emotion or rely on logic alone, but to integrate both sources of information.
Complete the worksheet
Emotion Mind
What am I feeling, fearing, wanting or protecting?
Reasonable Mind
What facts, evidence, constraints and likely consequences matter?
Wise Mind
- What is both emotionally honest and practically effective?
- Which choice best protects important values and responsibilities?
- What would I advise someone I care about?
- What small next step can I take without demanding certainty?
Example
Emotion Mind says, “Leave the project because criticism feels unbearable.” Reasonable Mind says, “Stay because the project matters and one review does not determine the outcome.” Wise Mind may choose to pause, ask for specific feedback and decide after reviewing the actual changes required.
Common mistake
Wise Mind is not simply the calmest answer or a compromise between two extremes. It is an integrated judgment that respects emotional information while remaining connected to facts and consequences.
